Africa Mental Health Reforms and Care in Africa Summit 2025

Theme: “Transforming Mental Health Systems in Africa: Policy, Partnerships, and Progress”

The Africa Mental Health Reforms and Care Summit 2025 is a historic, continental gathering convened by the Association of Mental Health Reform Organizations in Africa (AMHROA). More than just a conference, this event represents a unified movement to transform the narrative, systems, and realities of mental health care in Africa.

Held in Ghana, a continental leader in mental health policy, the summit brings together ministers, policymakers, researchers, development partners, private sector actors, and advocates from across 19+ African countries and the diaspora.

It responds to decades of underinvestment, stigma, fragmented care, and punitive mental health laws—especially around suicide. The summit aims to establish a continent-wide roadmap toward equitable, sustainable, and culturally relevant mental health systems.

Purpose & Theory of Change

AMHROA envisions an Africa where mental health is viewed as a right, not a privilege. By creating space for dialogue, knowledge sharing, and actionable commitments, the summit aims to:

  • Align policy and legal frameworks to support mental wellbeing.

  • Mobilize funding and partnerships for infrastructure and services.

  • Promote culturally grounded, community-led care.

  • Center African voices and experiences in global mental health reform.

  • Foster collaborative research and data-driven strategies.

The plan highlights the importance of comprehensive mental care, governance systems, and advocacy for successful implementation.

It also underscores the significance of legislative advocacy, policymaker engagement, and awareness campaigns for mental health policy change across Africa. The World Health Organization emphasizes the right to well-being and the need for reforms to address mental health conditions comprehensively, strengthening community-based networks for accessible and quality services.
